Hi there

I asked my consultant if it was possible for me to be given this instead of high doses of steroids. He said no immediatly and would not discuss it. Will ask my nurse on Friday when I go.

Hi Jenny

There is some information on this on the NRAS website Apparently Lodotra was licensed for use in Europe last year.

I have been on varying doses of prednisolone throughout the last 24 years and now require at least a minimum dose to function (sometimes the case with long term use). This slow release drug has shown to be effective in relieving the symptom of morning stiffness as it kicks in at a time when the body most needs it. Unfortunately in all other respects it is like any other steroid treatment acting only on the symptoms of the disease. I think for this reason, and the need to control the disease progress itself, rheumatologists wouldn't find it of particular benefit to most people. The general pattern of treatment is to avoid steroid use due to side effects and concentrate on the disease modyfying angle, better all round. That said, in some circumstances it could be a useful addition in the war on Rheumatoid.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies, I have since found out Lodotora is 20x cost of regular prednisolone! I still think it could be worth it, otherwise, why are these drugs developed! Went for an appointment with my consultant yesterday, and typical of me, completely forgot to mention Lodotora! It now looks as though they want me to try Rituximab! Scared stiff.
